Internet Scam Alert: A Domain Stolen
By Shelley Lockwood
As a gift I purchased my husband a domain and one year's hosting with Chitie.com (they then changed their name to hostgroup1.com and now they are somehow tied in to breezeland.com).
The price included a one year registration of his domain. At first all was well, then he started having the same problems as scamfreesuccess with the hosting going up and down on a regular basis.
His is a hobby site, something to do with fantasy hockey. I don't understand it, but he enjoys it and takes it quite seriously.
Up until now the problem had been that our domains were being managed under Chitie's (or whatever they were calling themselves at this time) account. The domain was registered in my husband's name, but not under our administrative control.
After straightening out the mess with my domain, we sent in the requested information to have his domain moved into our account. In the meantime, without our knowledge, ownership had been transferred into their administrative contact's name.
My husband no longer showed up as the owner of that domain name, and there was nothing we could do about it.
In other words, they had outright stolen his domain. Even though we had paid for it, they denied us access to it. The only way he could have renewed it without any problem was to continue hosting with them.
The guy doesn't even want the domain name. He didn't renew it and now it has expired. The main problem is that it doesn't become available again for at least 90 days.
We'll probably be able to purchase it again in 90 days or so, but in the meantime he had to register a new domain name and change everything over to the new one www.internethockeyleague.com.
We've learned our lesson, hope we can help you avoid the same problem by sharing this story.
If the hosting company you are going with is including the registration of your domain, make sure it will be set up in your account, in your name and with all of your contact information including as the administrative contact.
To be on the safe side though, you're better to just go ahead and buy it yourself.
Take care,
Shelley
