Phishing Scam Alert: Phishing Online Don't get Hooked!
By Shelley Lockwood
Phishing- Now there's a new one.
What exactly is "phishing", well it's when someone disguises themselves as being from a service provider that you actually deal with and misleads you into giving them financial or personal information.
They usually use spam to contact you, advising you that they need to update your account information.
They'll ask for things like your credit card or banking information, user names, passwords and other sensitive information.
These scammers are quite savvy, they don't expect you to simply give them the information so they get you to click over to an official looking website that resembles the real thing. From there they get your information.
The websites are usually well done, and appear to be owned by the legitimate company they claim to be contacting you from.
They'll use excuses like needing to update their database, and imply urgency in order to avoid disruption to your account.
These scammers will take your information and run up your credit cards or obtain further credit.
Beware when asked to submit or validate your information even if the request appears to be coming from a legitimate company that you purchase from or secure services from.
Don't respond to this request by return e-mail or by going to the website that they direct you to. Instead call the company directly and verify that they have in fact requested the information. Make sure to use a phone number that appears on your regular billing or contract with the company, one that you know is legitimate.
If it turns out to be a false request make sure you report this to them and to the ftc.
Take care,
Shelley
