email Scam Alert: Descramble This!
By Shelley Lockwood
Not a day goes by that I don't get at least one spam mail offering me a super duper special deal on a cable descrambler.
No wonder it made the FTC's top 12 Scams most likely to arrive via bulk e-mail.
What exactly are these cable descrambler kits we see so much about online? They are trying to sell us something that is supposed to "descramble" cable television signals.
So what's the deal? Simple, for the most part you'll send them your money and they'll send you a piece of junk that doesn't work.
Let's say on the off chance that it does work...if you use it you're stealing cable and that my friend is just plain illegal.
It's simply amazes me (yes I seem to say that a lot)! While researching this article I visited quite a few sites.
The first bunch, though having different domain names all lead back to the same company. I tried to find an address or a phone number for them. Surprise, surprise I couldn't find any.
Then there were the ones selling reports on how to build your own descrambler. The one common theme throughout all the sites; stealing cable is illegal and they don't condone or encourage it. Hmmm... but they don't mind selling you equipment or instructions on how to build equipment that will enable you to do so.
Some even went so far as to include disclaimers on their site including the line "I hereby hold the seller harmless for any unauthorized use and/ or distribution of this equipment"
Something along the lines of notifying you that it is illegal to use the descrambler to intercept services that you are not paying for, and this by no means is there intention. In fact some of them even say that you should "block out" channels that your local cable company does not supply. That once you have received the equipment you should notify your cable company which channels you will be viewing so that they can bill you accordingly. Ya Right!
So they're protecting their butts, even though they can be relatively sure that the equipment they are selling is intended for illegal purposes.
If you want to own your equipment outright, talk to your cable company to see if you can purchase directly from them or what equipment they approve for use with their services.
Take care,
Shelley
