Rip Offs Alert: Domain Slamming
By Shelley Lockwood
So what's domain slamming. Well, let's see....you get a notice from a domain registrar advising that your domain will be expiring or something that looks somewhat like a renewal notice.
Not wanting your domain name to expire, you quickly renew and pay the fee.
What you may not have noticed is that the registrar who sent you the notice isn't actually who you registered with in the first place.
So in effect what ends up happening is, you sign up with a new company unknowingly. You end up transferring your domain registration to a competing registrar. You've switched and you didn't even know it.
What's really ironic is that so many different registrars are crying fowl, while at the same time using the exact same misleading tactics themselves.
I've personally received a "renewal notice", what saved me was the date. I couldn't quite figure out why I was receiving the notice more than six months in advance of my domain name registration expiry date. So I peeked into my files and then became even more confused when I saw that the company I had originally registered with wasn't the one that had sent me the notice.
Now I'm aware so I can avoid being taken...hope this helps you too!
Here are a couple of examples:
I receive these e-mails on a regular basis. Though, I've removed myself from their list numerous times, I just keep getting them. This is not the company that I registered my domain names with. These e-mails are totally misleading. Do yourself a favor and don't deal with these scammers.
