email Scam Alert: Spammers spamming Do Not Spam Registry
By Shelley Lockwood
The bitter sweet taste of irony....you receive an e-mail inviting you to add yourself to a "Do Not Spam List". The invitation itself is sent via spam. "For a nominal fee" they will stop spam at the source by adding your e-mail address to the "Do Not Spam Registry" that doesn't exist.
This scam is a rip off of the genuine "Do Not Call Registry" pertaining to telemarketing. With a twist.
So is it blackmail? Pay us and we'll stop spamming you. Outright fraud? Give us money but we won't deliver because this doesn't exist. Phishing for your contact information? Give us your e-mail address so we can add it to a "responds to spam list" with the added bonus of a "nominal fee to boot" and then probably more money again when they sell your information.
What a creative mix, all of the above with a little bit of attempted ID Theft thrown in for safe measure.
The e-mail sends you to a very authentic looking site (which looks like the legitimate National Do Not Call Registry website) where they attempt to capture your full contact details and your credit card information.
Marketing is an important part of business. Without marketing there would be no sales. Without sales there would be no business. Unfortunately when a new marketing technique proves effective wide-spread abuse of it closely follows.
Legal regulations and public services develop to protect the public. The "Do Not Call Registry" for example enables people to add their names to a list banning telemarketers from calling them.
They don't contact people to join (especially using the method they protect against). They offer a service to protect the public. Not fear to strong-arm protection money out of them.
Before giving your information to anyone use due diligence and confirm their authenticity.
Take care,
Shelley
