The Free Guide to Starting an Internet Business
Part I Chapter 2
By Shelley Lockwood
Start your own online business...Hang on, why don't we mix it up a bit and approach reality from a different angle?
Imagine for a moment that it's six months from today.....You've changed start your own online business to started....all of those failed make-money-quick attempts finally a thing of the past (or you started off in the right direction and avoided them altogether!)
Your web site is built and growing, visitor traffic is on the rise and money has started to come in. Not tons of money, but enough extra money that your own online business is making a profit.
And, oh yes, let's not forget your goal of working full-time from home. It's getting a little closer with each month that passes.
Notice I don't equate overnight riches with Start your OWN online business? I repeat: Starting your OWN online business takes time. It takes effort. That's reality.
Your own online business success depends on the right combination of planning (having an Internet business plan with realistic goals), the right Internet business tools (that helps you build an effective web site), hard work and determination.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying; Period!
Back to the present of starting your own online business. The business itself is generating income from a web site. We talked a little about this in chapter one. The point of this chapter is your "OWN" online business.
Now that we've gotten reality out of the way as step one, let's talk about what you need in order to start your own online business.
Computer & Internet connection
Your own domain name
Web site hosting
Web site design software
Search engine spider statistics
Subscriber list/publishing capability
Ad Tracking capability
I'm not showing you this list to overwhelm you. Just sticking to reality. It's what you need to get your own online business started. Don't be discouraged, other than the computer & Internet connection there's an all-in-one solution that I'll discuss in the next chapter. Don't sweat the technical stuff you'll find out how little you need to learn about it.
The other thing you're going to need is an idea for your online business; a theme for your web site. But before we get into that.....
What I really want to talk about in this chapter is why I say "Start Your OWN online business". The Net is chock full of home business opportunities. Just about everywhere you turn you'll see offers to help you get rich quick. How you can invest as little as $5 or drop $5000.00 on a biz op and make money money money.
If you are thinking about buying into any type of "opportunity" - DON'T. Sorry I yelled that but it's important....so, please don't do it.
Don't get bogged down reading through the scam articles right now but make sure you take the time to read them soon. You'll be faced with plenty of temptation (I know I've given in to it on occasion) and the best way to steer clear is by being aware that they exist.
The only opportunity they offer is the loss of your money, your time and the destruction of your goal to have your OWN online business. The only money being made is by the scam artists themselves.
The only Real way to make money on the Net is by starting your OWN online business. Your OWN income generating web site. I'm not even saying that you have to have your own product; but your OWN web site is a MUST.
Don't worry about not having a product to sell you'll learn about other ways to make money in part two.
For now let's get into more details about: Start your OWN online business = Your own...Web site > Traffic > Income
Your own online business is a web site consisting of information that relates to a specific topic. Getting people to visit that web site by being found and seen when they search for relevant info (to your web site topic) in the search engines.
Remember I said with the right tools you won't have to worry about the technical stuff? It's true, but knowing some of the industry lingo or terms commonly used helps (but not all that complicated).
Let's cover the important ones for getting started:
Web site = made up of a series of web pages on the Internet
Content = information that appears in the form of web pages
Web site theme= what your web site information is about
Keywords= words that people use to search for information in search engines
Keyword phrases= a group (when more than one is used) of keywords used to search for information in search engines
Traffic= Visitors to a web site
Search engine results= list of web sites that comes up at the search engine
Search engine traffic= Visitors that arrive from a search engine after performing a search
Targeted traffic= Interested in your web site theme
Now a couple of facts:
Most people use the Internet to find information
Most people start looking for information by typing a keyword phrase in a search engine
There are sales web sites (primary goal is to make a sale)
There are content web sites (primary goal is provide valid information)
There are web sites that do both (provide valid information with the goal of making a sale)
Now let's re-phrase:
"Your own online business is a web site consisting of information that relates to a specific topic. Getting people to visit that web site by being found and seen when they search for relevant info (to your web site topic) in the search engines. "
Your own online business consists of a content web site that provides valuable information. Targeted traffic arrives at your web site from search engine results.
How can a content web site be profitable? Actually in quite a few different ways (we'll cover that in part two) but for now I'll say your own online business (content site) can become profitable:
By making valid recommendations.
And, key to recommending successfully?
Credibility>Trust>Genuine: By focusing on delivering credible information, trust is developed. Making genuine recommendations (i.e. to fill a need or solve a problem) of quality products/services leads to income.
In other words by concentrating first & foremost on delivering what visitors are looking for. Never selling; but recommending a solution to their problem or directing them to something that fulfills their needs. Sending them there because you believe in the solution;getting something in return is just a bonus for your good deed.
What this all boils down to is....You'll offer solutions to your visitors and in return you'll receive a portion of the sale.
And that's just the beginning, as you start to build your own online business you'll be able to add other streams of income. For example from outside advertising. But that's for later.
You'll learn about all of this in detail by taking the course I talk about in section two. Make no mistake about it, completing the course is going to be a lot of work. Most importantly is that when you finish the course you'll be well on the road to having started. Will it work for you? Maybe, maybe not. It's all going to depend on the effort you put in and how well you stay focused. What you learn from the course and the choices you make.
What I can tell you is this....If it's too much effort for you to complete the course it's probably a good indication that starting your own business (of any kind) may not be for you. That's ok too. It's better to find out before you invest money into getting your online business started.
So bottom line of OWN online business - Having your own web site is key to the long-term success of your OWN online business.
