The Guarantee Checklist
Is their a guarantee or trial period? No? Don't purchase!
What is the duration of the trial period?
Are you enrolling as well as buying?
What are the conditions?
Is it a full money back guarantee?
Is the guarantee being offered by the company that you are paying?
Unlike buying from a store, with online purchases you don't get to hold the product in your hand first. You can't skim through the book or inspect each component of the package before handing over your money.
Purchase only products that offer a trial period. This trial period is usually offered in the form of a money back guarantee. You pay for your purchase up front and are given a length of time to review it and try it. If you are not satisfied you can return or delete it for a full refund.
The duration of the trial period ranges anywhere from 30 days to lifetime. Make sure that the duration is long enough for you to evaluate the product.
Sometimes when you purchase a product you are also enrolling in a subscription or for a service. If this is the case you will probably have to request a refund for your purchase, as well as cancel your membership.
The guarantee should be based on your satisfaction with the product only. The ideal guarantee allows you to simply request a refund without having to offer any explanation.
If you purchase a product that includes a monthly service or subscription (i.e. web hosting, magazines) the guarantee may take into account how much time has been used and that you will get to keep your domain name. With some of these products/services you may find a pro rated refund to be acceptable. Just make sure that you understand the guidelines and that there is no fine print.
The guarantee should be for your full money back, less any shipping charges. Make sure there are not any hidden clauses regarding penalties or fees.
Be aware of upselling. You may be giving your payment information to one company, who then passes it on to another for processing. You may be giving consent without even knowing it. Make sure you know who you are buying from and who you are paying.
Of course the best guarantees are lifetime guarantees. Believe me when I say some companies actually offer this and stand behind it.
Don't ever hesitate at requesting a refund if a product does not meet your expectations. Please be honest though, don't take advantage of their trust.
