Easy Money Scam Alert: Foreign Lottery Scam Details

By Shelley Lockwood

Ever get one of these?

Win $500,000.00 US, tax free today!  Your chances of winning are 1 in 6.
Hundreds win every week using our secret system!

Or how about ELGORDO LOTO LOTTERY WINNING NOTIFICATION..the one announcing you're a winner though you've never purchased a ticket.

It's a scam...there's no such thing as a secret system for winning the lottery.  Odds of 1 and 6?  I don't think so. It's often been said your odds of winning a lottery are about as high as getting struck by lightning.

For the most part, these scammers won't even buy the lottery tickets. They just take your money and run.

On the off chance that they do purchase your tickets, what you may not realize is that buying lottery tickets cross border by phone or by mail is illegal in the US.

Those that actually use your money to fund the purchase of lottery tickets, usually just claim any winnings for themselves.

What they are really after is your banking information or credit card number. They'll use your banking information to make unauthorized withdrawals or run up bogus charges on  your credit card.

Purchase just one of these tickets and your name will be added to a "suckers" list.  Your name will be sold to other unscrupulous scammers.

As tempting as they may sound, don't respond to these foreign lottery scams.

In the US alone victims are responding to these scams to the tune of US$120,000,000.00 a year. It's not difficult to see who's on the winning end of this so called "lottery".

Here's an example:

Here's the e-mail I received.  Total bull! I didn't respond so I can only assume that they would have tried to bilk me for some cash in order to receive my so called winnings. Bad enough when they try to suck you in by purchasing a ticket, now they try to convince you you're a winner when you didn't enter in the first place.
